What Really Happens When You Don’t Wash Your Makeup Brushes

What’s the golden rule for makeup lovers? Wash your face and remove your makeup before going to bed.  After all, you don’t want day-old makeup and grime sitting on your face overnight.

But why then wouldn’t you do the same for your brushes? Don’t they come in contact with your skin on a daily basis too? Without a good scrub, old makeup, oil, and dirt will pile up on those bristles and become a breeding ground for bacteria.

For the record, a breakout here and there isn’t the only thing that you have to worry about either. Poor brush hygiene can lead to far more serious health issues—like in the case of model Anthea Page, who caught a highly contagious strain of staphylococcus aureus from dirty makeup brushes.

So take a second and try to remember when the last time you washed your brushes was. And when you finish reading this post, be sure to give it a good, thorough wash.

  1. Acne

Let’s start with the most obvious one--acne.

When you wash your brushes, you’re basically giving bacteria the chance to wreak havoc on your skin.

It doesn’t matter if you diligently wash your face every night to avoid breakouts. Because you use a dirty brush on your face anyway, you’re just basically clogging up your pores again.

  1. Viruses

Did you know that common cold and cold sore viruses can live longer on dirty makeup brushes? You don’t even have to be sharing brushes with others to catch it. If you’re not carefully practicing good makeup brush hygiene and you decide to powder your nose with a virus-infested brush, then you can stop wondering how in the world you just caught the cold twice in one season.

  1. Bacteria

Just like viruses, bacteria can also live a long time on dirty brushes—which can lead to more serious health concerns like staph infections if it comes into contact with an open wound.

Conjuctivitis (pink eye) is also another concern, which can be spread with unclean eye makeup brushes and tools.

  1. Skin Irritation

When you go months on end without washing your brushes, the bristles get very oily and dirty that it starts to transfer the excess debris on your skin. This can lead to skin redness and bumps.

  1. Dull Skin

Sebum, that waxy natural material that comes out through your pores get transferred on your brushes and build up over time. When you don’t clean your tools you’re essentially transferring all that dirty sebum back onto your face. And too much sebum makes you lose that dewy glow and instead, make your skin look dull and lifeless.

Are you prepping to rinse your brushes yet?

Keep in mind that even if you were lucky enough to not have encountered any of the problems mentioned above, your brushes are also an investment. Regardless if you’re using natural or synthetic bristles, not washing your brushes can lead to your makeup tools getting ruined.

So grab that cleanser and rinse those brushes thoroughly. Your skin and makeup brushes will thank you for it.
